Diagnostics

A true root-cause analysis is the only real way to determine the correct course of action when identifying a fault and repairing the vehicle. Throwing parts at a problem with the hopes it solves your issues is not alright by any means. As a customer, you deserve to know that the work and parts going into your vehicle are correct and will resolve the issue at hand, not mask it. With every problem comes a reason for that issue; we treat the problem, not the symptoms.

Fuel / Evap

Increasing fuel costs drive the need for vehicles to perform at their peak now more than ever. As time goes on and the vehicle accrues mileage, the system naturally gets dirty. The throttle body gets coated with contaminants and your filter/fuel injectors get clogged. Poor performance out of these components decreases fuel economy and engine output. Here at Tual’s Garage, injectors are removed, flowed on a flow bench, spray patterns are analyzed for evenness, ultrasonic cleaned, their filters and orings replaced, and reflowed to ensure each injector operates exactly the same. Most modern vehicles are direct injected, meaning the fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber; clever name. While this form of injection is superior in almost every way, they require regular attention to the intake valves. In port injection (fuel injected pre-intake valve), fuel would pass over the intake chamber and help to clean them while removing carbon deposits. Direct injection does not provide this added cleaning affect and leads to a buildup of carbon on the intake valves. This can lead to mis-fires, poor fuel economy, and overall lower engine power. A proper carbon cleaning is the only surefire way to remove this deposit and restore performance. Evap systems are in charge of venting fuel vapors from the fuel tank and controlling fuel tank pressure. This system is a closed system that if a leak occurs, you will get a check engine light. As simple as leaving the gas cap off will cause a major evap leak and will lead to a poor idle and engine performance. With proper diagnostics, even the smallest of leaks can be identified and corrected, restoring performance and clearing those codes which may be preventing you from passing inspection.

Electrical Systems

One of the main reasons cars are harder to work on now-adays is the electrical systems inside of them. There are dozens of modules that control things from your brakes, instrument cluster, radio, airbags, engine, transmission, etc. These modules talk to one another and validate information between them; usually this is over CAN (Controller Area Network). This is a high-speed communication protocol that allows serial data to be transferred between the main computer and all of the subsequent modules. Why mention this? Electrical systems control every aspect of the vehicle and their systems become more and more complex as time progresses. Understanding electrical systems requires not just fancy scan tools, but the fundamental understanding of voltage, resistance, current, (Ohm’s Law) and how to properly use an oscilloscope to trace waveforms. While a basic multimeter can still be used, understanding of these systems allows me diagnose these systems on a deeper level.

Brake Calipers

Brake Service

Brakes are one of the most important systems in the vehicle—for obvious reasons. The system performs best when the fluid is serviced regularly by measuring water content and contaminant levels. Brake fluid is incredibly hygroscopic; meaning it absorbs moisture very fast. This can lead to a soft brake pedal feel which does not give us confidence when trying to stop. Brake pads and brake rotors are checked for proper thickness as required by the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). Improper roundness in a brake rotor can lead to a pulsing effect when depressing the pedal. This is checked with a dial indicator to ensure it falls within manufacturer specifications.

Vehicle Maintenance

Routine services such as oil changes, air filters, bushing and motor mount inspection/replacement, and tire rotations. These types of services are a regularly scheduled service item that should be addressed routinely. While these are small jobs, they play a huge role in expanding the life of your vehicle and keeping it operating in its optimal range.

Heating & AC

Keeping your heating and AC systems fully operational not only gives you comfort; they can have a huge impact on your vehicle’s health. A poor performing heating system could mean your engine does not have the ability to cools itself down which can lead to head gasket issues and irreversible engine damage. A leaking heater core can leak into the cabin of your car and if not caught soon enough, could develop mold or even damage other components making the repair more expensive. Your AC system is a relatively self-contained system that doesn’t require much work outside of regular leak testing and efficiency testing. Small leaks can lead to refrigerant and compressor oil to escape from the system causing compressor damage as well as contaminants entering the system requiring major repairs. This system, if maintained, can last a very long time without issues.

Dan diagnosed my vehicle, replaced the body control module and we haven’t had a problem since. He also programed a spare key for my jeep. He does great work and has competitive pricing. We’re grateful he’s here!
